LiveCD, or LiveDistro (for full live distribution) is generally used to indicate a distribution of an operating system that can be booted at boot time and executed without requiring hard disk installation.

The term Live indicates that the distribution of the operating system will be performed directly without requiring system preparation or installation of any specific component.
This type of distribution generally does not change the state of the machine and does not use the hard drive although this operation is possible if the user explicitly requests it.

Live distributions can be used for demonstration or evaluation purposes and are a clear advantage to the inexperienced user as they allow you to completely skip the setup and configuration phase that is usually required in the initial stages of using an operating system.
An alternative use of Live Distributions is the one that is oriented to the diagnostics and recovery of data from systems that are no longer able to perform a proper startup of the operating system; this kind of distributions typically includes tools for recovering data from the hard disk, restoring it properly, or scanning with antivirus software.

Live CDs (LiveCDs) and DVDs (LiveDVDs) are usually used as storage media even if there are specific distributions for USB storage devices (USB live).
On personal computers, LiveCD distributions are created from a bootable disk. In the case of CDs, for example, this result is obtained by using a file (containing the boot image), which emulates the behavior of a floppy disk.
As Live distributions use in most cases of read-only media, a portion of RAM as a storage medium (RAM disk) is used to hold temporary and configuration files that may be needed during the operating system’s operation .
