Spring Creators Update (aka April 2018 Update, also version 1803) is a major update for the Windows 10 operating system, formerly known under the code name Redstone 4
Changes and improvements in Windows 10 Spring Creators Update:
- Timeline – the list of activities on your devices. The function “Timeline” was originally expected in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, but its output was postponed. The Timeline extends the capabilities of the “Task View” by adding a history of actions that you previously performed on the computer. Click the “Task Viewer” button on the taskbar or use the combination of the Windows + Tab key to see the activities that you performed “Earlier today” or on previous days. In the Timeline, you can see the sites opened in Microsoft Edge, the articles read in the “News” application, the documents with which you worked in Microsoft Word and the places that you viewed in the “Maps”. The main purpose of this function is to resume activities that were abruptly interrupted or deliberately delayed. Timeline supports synchronization between devices. Thus, you can continue any activity on another PC where your account is used. The personal voice assistant Cortana will offer a list of activities to resume when switching to another device. The user can use the scrollbar or the search bar to navigate through the activities. All actions are sorted by the day, and the actions for the day are sorted by the hour. You can use the context menu to clear the activities in a certain hour. You can configure the Timeline in the Settings> Privacy> Activity Log. - Fast pairing of Bluetooth devices. The “quick pairing” feature will make it easier to pair Bluetooth devices with Windows 10. Just move the Bluetooth wireless device to pairing mode next to the computer. Windows 10 will automatically recognize the device and show you the pairing request – you will no longer need to go to the Settings application to access the Bluetooth settings. Initially, the new feature will work with Surface Precision mouse handlers and with devices whose manufacturers have added support for the new function. Similar technologies are used on other platforms: Fast Pair on Android or Apple’s quick pairing of Apple’s AirPods.
- Support for Progressive Web Apps in the Windows Store. The Microsoft Edge browser gets a number of new features that allow you to run progressive Web applications (Progressive Web Apps, PWAs) in Windows 10. This is the new standard for web applications that behave like desktop applications. Each application has its own window and shortcut on the taskbar, is able to work offline and can send notifications. PWA technology is already supported by Google, Mozilla and Microsoft, and Apple is already working on the implementation of support. Microsoft will index and offer progressive web applications in the Windows Store. They can be installed, as well as any other application of Windows 10. It is expected that in the future you can also install them directly from Microsoft Edge.
- Installing Windows 10 functional updates has become faster. This change will be appreciated by all users of Windows 10. Most of the process of installing the update functions will now run in the background – during this time, the user will be able to fully use the computer. This means that the installation timeout will be reduced. The online phase of the update installation process will be performed with a low priority, and the performance of the computer will not be greatly reduced. According to Microsoft tests, this innovation allowed to reduce the time of the offline update phase of functions to Windows 10, version 1803 (when the system is unavailable) from 82 minutes to 30 minutes.
- Manage Fonts in the Application Settings. As part of the process of rejecting the old control panel and moving the functionality in the Application settings, this time the developers paid attention to the “Fonts” screen. New application page Options> Personalization> Fonts allows you to view, install and delete fonts. For ease of installation, fonts will now be available in the Microsoft Store. Click the “Get additional fonts in the Store” link and the Microsoft Fonts collection available for download and installation opens.
- Function People: Improvements. The function “People”, which appeared in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, this time received a large number of improvements. The function has been supported by drag and drop – now you can drag and drop contacts from the People pop-up menu to sort them according to your wish. In the Fall Creators Update, the “People” feature allowed you to lock only the three main contacts on the taskbar. Now you can choose how many contacts you want to assign from 1 to 10. To set this option, go to Settings> Personalization> Taskbar. Users who are assigned to the People pop-up panel will also be able to send you animated notifications.
- Support for HEIF images. Windows 10 now supports High Efficiency Image File (HEIF) image viewing without using third-party software. This graphic format is used by the Camera application on iPhone mobile devices. In addition, Google also adds support for this format in Android. When you first open the HEIF or HEIC file, the Photos application opens and the process for installing the necessary codecs from the Microsoft Store starts. After that, the images will open seamlessly in the Photos application, and thumbnails and metadata will be available in Windows Explorer.
- Log in without a password in Windows 10 S mode. Microsoft now allows you to log on without entering a password. The first time this feature will be available only in Windows 10 S. To do this, you will need to download the Microsoft Authenticator application and configure the Windows Hello service accordingly. After that, you will no longer see the form for entering the password, neither in the Options application, nor on the logon screen. If you can not use your smartphone, you can enter the PIN code as an alternative to logging into the system.
- OneDrive status in the navigation area. Information on the status of folder synchronization stored in OneDrive now appears in the left navigation panel of Windows Explorer. To enable or disable this feature, select the menu View> Options> View and find the option “Always display the availability status”.
- Windows Update icon. When a warning or warning appears in the system tray, the Windows Update service icon will appear.
- Windows Update will block the hibernation: if your computer is connected to an AC adapter, Windows Update will prevent the PC from entering sleep mode for a maximum of 2 hours if you need to upgrade the system. As a result, the probability of installing updates is increased if you do not use a PC.
- Recover passwords for local accounts. Users can ask test questions for local accounts. You will need to answer the test questions on the authorization screen when you try to restore access to the computer. To set test questions, go to Settings> Accounts> Login Options.
- Updating the interface in the framework of Fluent Design. More and more elements of the Windows 10 interface now use the Fluent Design concept – from the Settings and touch keyboard application to the taskbar, the Share function and the clock and calendar pop-up window.
- Changed the design of the game panel: the game panel, called by the hotkey Windows + G received interface improvements. The user can now choose the theme of the game panel: a light, dark or current Windows theme.
- Windows Defender Settings: Settings> Security Updates and Security> Windows Defender is renamed to “Windows Security”. It now offers quick access to various security settings, including account security and device security.
- Categories in the privacy settings: in the Settings> Privacy menu on the navigation bar, there are separate categories that now share Windows privacy settings and application permission settings.
- Enable or disable color filter hot keys. In Options> Accessibility> Color filters and High contrast, you can now enable and disable hotkeys. By default, they are disabled.
- Viewing and clearing the dictionary: on the Settings> Privacy> Speech, handwriting and text entry page, you can view the user dictionary or clear it if necessary.
- Clean the disk in the storage settings. The Disk Cleanup Tool is now available in Settings> System> Device Memory> Free Space Now.
- New features for developers and system administrators
- Improvements to the Windows subsystem for Linux (WSL)
